RUSH Tips Part 4: Surviving Recruitment Week

September 24, 2015

Skit Round! The most fun round for us, and the one with some of the best conversations!

Hey y'all! Sorority Recruitment at Ole Miss starts this Sunday and I am so excited! For everyone who is about to begin the formal recruitment process, I was in your shoes just one year ago! I just wanted to share some of the things that helped me get through the week!

Going into RUSH week last year, I was a nervous wreck. The recruitment process where I grew up, is not super intense, and everyone told me how crazy RUSH is at a big southern school like Ole Miss. I had also heard a lot of crazy rumors including that being from the North, I would be cut from a bunch of houses right at the beginning. First of all, being cut just because you are not from the south is not a thing! I had an excellent RUSH week, and I was only dropped by like 2 houses throughout the course of the entire week. While it helps to know people who are already in sororities when you go through RUSH, I only knew two girls in sororities here at Ole Miss, and I can attest to the fact that knowing people isn't everything! So no matter, who you are, where you came from, or who you know, don't stress over it!

I can be shy sometimes, so I was worried as I walked into my first house, the very first day of RUSH. The thing that completely calmed my fears and made a huge difference for me was when the first girl I talked to said that she was just as nervous as I was! I hadn't thought about the fact that the people on the other side of the RUSH process were probably experiencing it for the first time from that side! After that I wasn't nervous and I just focused on having conversations with the girls and being myself! I ended up really enjoying RUSH because I love to talk and meet new people and thats literally what you do for a week straight!

Tips for Surviving the Week:

  • If you have recruitment during the actual school year, get as much of your homework done ahead of time as you can. Rush is exhausting and it takes up a ton of time and I promise you, homework is the last thing you will want to do once you're done. You will probably want to head back to your dorm and sleep after each round.
  • Take care of yourself. There will be a lot of girls and everyone is in really close contact, it is so easy to get sick especially if you haven't been getting a lot of sleep.
  • You will be talking a lot. Like, A LOT, a lot. Drink lots of water and be prepared to lose your voice. I always drank warm water with honey and lemon last year which is great for your throat.
  • Be yourself. Don't say things you think a particular sorority would want to hear. People can tell if you're being fake and honestly its better to stand out.
  • Have an open mind. You never know what sorority you will end up loving. Just because you're a legacy or because all your friends are going a certain sorority, does not mean you have to! Trust me when I say you will know where you belong, and you will end up at the right house for you, it all has a way of working out in the end.
  • Have fun! It really is a lot of fun just remember to enjoy it! Its not worth stressing over!

~Good luck to everyone going through Recruitment!~

*I have not yet been on the other side of Rush so I would like to say that none of the things I have mentioned or will mention in future posts are from the perspective of my sorority but rather I am sharing advise that other people gave me and things that I learned going through RUSH myself.

Fashion Friday: Simple Tanks & Printed Skirts

September 18, 2015

I hope everyone had a good week! So glad its finally the weekend! Today I wanted to share this Lilly skirt! I love it because it adds just a pop of color but the pattern is not too crazy! It's super easy to throw on and it's perfect for church! I wore it to my sorority's formal chapter meeting a few weeks ago. There's just a little bit of pink in it so I paired it with my pink Rebecca Minkoff purse!

DG Fall Date Party!

September 17, 2015

On Tuesday, we had our first Delta Gamma date party of the year! Technically for the sophomores it was our first DG date party ever because our winter one got snowed out twice last year! It was so much fun and I wanted to share what I wore, especially for newbies who are curious about what to wear to a date function! If you really don't know anything about Greek life, usually a sorority or a fraternity will rent out a bar and hire a band or DJ, a few times a year, and the members can come and bring dates! Sometimes they have fun dress up themes and sometimes you just dress nice (not as nice as a formal/semi-formal, but a cute dress or romper and wedges!)

We all had so much fun at our date party! Sometimes people bring dates that they are friends with and other times people just get set up randomly and a lot of us got set up for this date party! Being set up for a date function is actually so fun because you get to meet new people! We all met beforehand at some of our friends' apartment for appetizers and then went to date party together.

Ole Miss Vs. UT Martin White Out Game!

September 9, 2015

Hey y'all! I've been super busy with school work lately so I haven't been posting as regularly as I would like but I wanted to share some pictures from Saturday's Ole Miss football game! We played UT Martin and won 76-3, so it was not a super interesting game. We ended up leaving just before half time because it was really hot and we were already winning by a lot. When I say it was hot, I mean it was HOT. I can't remember the last time I sweated so much! It was a really cool game though because it was before labor day, so everyone wore white!

Outfit Details:
Bracelets: David Yurman, Lilly and Laura,
Alex and Ani, and Tory Burch for Fitbit

Fashion Friday: Last days to wear white!

September 4, 2015

This dress was one of the things I ordered from the Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale a few weeks ago! I've had my eye on it for a while but I decided to wait until it went on sale to purchase it. I wore it to church last weekend because I wanted to get to wear it before Labor Day on Monday! I really like that the pattern isn't too crazy (its cute little fish!) and it has a fun little cut-out in the back! I'm going to wear it a ton next summer! It's a nice classic dress so I paired it with Jack Rogers.

Get Gameday Ready!

September 1, 2015

Ole Miss Gameday Attire for the Grove

This Saturday marks the first Ole Miss home game of the season! I am so excited and I wanted to share some game day tips and pictures to help you get ready for Saturdays in the South!

If you are totally unfamiliar with southern college football games, let me fill you in. Basically everyone gets all dressed up (I'm talking dresses, and wedges) to tailgate for football games. At Ole Miss we tailgate in The Grove before the game and then walk over to the stadium. It's a huge deal and  since parking is not allowed on campus on game days, people set up super elaborate tents (some even have chandeliers) and the grove gets packed with people.

What you need for gamedays:

Outfits- Basically dresses are the most popular thing for girls to wear, but some people wear skirts, and when it gets colder, dark jeans and sweaters! There are assigned colors for specific games so we have "red" games and "blue" games. You don't have to follow the color obviously but its fun to coordinate with everyone! Most of my dresses are sleeveless so I always have a few neutral cardigans and jackets that could go over any of them because you never know what kind of weather you will get. I also have a few different color vests that are good over dresses and sweaters! I usually wear statement jewelry and stick with pretty simple dresses. I also recently purchased a nice red coat to wear for cold games, a lot of people wear dress coats in red or blue once it gets cold!

Shoes- Wedges are really popular, but it can be a pain to wear them all day for walking around and then standing during the game. Flat sandals are also good to wear for warm games! I wore boots to almost every game. I have a pair of red cowboy boots that I wore a lot but I wore riding boots sometimes too. When it gets cold you will probably want boots because they will keep your feet warm!

Accessories- A cross body bag is a must for game day. You just need enough room to carry your phone, your student ID, and maybe a portable phone charger! A lot of people also wear "game day buttons" showing your support for your team! I usually wear buttons with my sorority on them! A lot of girls wear these face stickers (they also have tattoos but the stickers are easier to take off) that say the name of your school too, that are so cute!
